Sending & Receiving Mail & Packages in Japan

In this section, we want to talk about the options you have for sending mail home and anywhere else as well as receiving mail while in Japan. Whether it be sending letters about your travels, sending packages or souvenirs to your friends and loved ones, or someone from home who wants to send you a care package, we will help you feel confident about staying connected by sending and receiving mail while in Japan.

The Post Office

Japan Post will be the main postal service that you will be utilizing while in Japan.

Addressing Mail

In order to address mail, you or your loved ones will want to use the following format:

Your Name
Room Number
Street Name
Town
Postal Code
Province

If you can, printing the address in English and Japanese will be helpful.

For mail going back home from Japan, once you have properly addressed your mail, you will want to ensure that it has the correct postage needed to send it. Stamps are sold at the Japan Post offices. Before sending your mail, ensure that you check the guidelines of what can and cannot be sent via mail on the Japan Post.
